How to Form Good Study Habits

Once students enter high school, their first reaction is one of liberty as they are not limited as much as they were when in elementary or middle school. However, after their initial reaction, they become stressed by the dramatic increase in homework, projects, and other academic criteria. Students, when faced with such a heavy load, in turn decide to procrastinate and decide to do it later because at the moment they feel stressed.

There are also other students who decide that when they are studying a new subject in school, once they have learned the material, it will constantly stay with them. By having these thought trains, students are generally more rushed and their grades are substantially lowered. In order to break these bad study habits, students need to have a program that will teach them how to keep organized as well as how to keep yourself efficiently on track. These are ten methods that seem to work well with students.

There are a couple of things that are not necessary, but are handy to have. One such thing is a daily planner. Another are folders to keep you organized. There are many other supplies that can help you, but in my opinion, these are the main two.

Step 1) One good thing to have with you most of the time is a daily planner. This will remind students of things they tend to forget. Keeping a daily planner with you everyday also puts you in a routine where you won't have to think of checking the planner for things you might have forgotten, but have your body do it for you because of the numerous repetitions.

Step 2) Another thing that is handy to have is a summarized version of a book for a class you are taking. This will give you a chance to look up on the material before taking the class so you have a generalized idea of what this course will give you.

Step 3) When forming good study habits, the first step is always important. You need to tell yourself that you are not going to be lazy anymore and that it is time to organize yourself.

Step 4) The next step is where you will start changing. Start a daily planner in which to keep track of things. Take the time on a free day to plan your week; plan what you will need for which day. This opens up a lot more time to do what you want.

Step 5)When going to school, especially for high school students, make sure that you have everything necessary for the school day with you before leaving. Many kids leave behind things like homework, projects, or important materials for the day, which is an irresponsible way to lose points or to get on the teacher's bad side.

Step 6) Another good method to help organize yourself is to keep a separate folder for every class. It might be a bit bulky to carry around, but it's better than losing your homework. It's also easy to navigate around because you know where everything is, unlike other students who have to rush to get things in order.

Step 7) Sleeping early is also a good study habit. Studies show that high school students need to get nine to ten hours of sleep a day for them to function as regular students should. Sleeping early helps you start the day full of energy and also gives you better concentration in school.

Step 8) Although it may not be a study habit, eating healthy also leads to being able to concentrate more. A breakfast of eggs, wheat toast, and a cup of milk helps you get energized early in the morning instead of eating a sugary breakfast cereal bar that makes you crash within two to three hours.

Step 9) A very important study habit is learning how to take good notes. Some teachers or professors move through the long material relatively fast, so it is imperative that you take well rounded notes. Most people won't have time to go back and read directly from the text, so taking well rounded notes dramatically shortens the amount of time needed to look for the information and study it.

Step 10) Another method can help you as well is to form study groups. Now, most students get a misconception of study groups. Study groups are not meant for you to hang out with your friends and gossip or chat about things. A study group is a group of equally intellectual students gathering together to study and ask each other for help. Getting a good study group can also abet you in your school work.
